I recall once working with an addict who was a perfect candidate for inpatient treatment. He’d failed to complete several outpatient rehabilitation programs, and although he was enrolled in one at the time, was extremely resistant to the whole idea of treatment. I tried on a number of occasions to convince him to try an inpatient program, but even though I couldn’t get through to him, I was able to convince him to allow his mother and a close friend of his to talk with me. After I spoke with them, they went home and had this conversation with him.
